UNFORTUNATELY- YES, YOU VERY WELL MAY BE!

Banned in Sweden and Japan, this chemical is one that you may not have heard of but one you may be lathering yourself in EVERY. DAY. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to do to my body is smother it in toxic chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer, irritation, skin disorders and toxicity in the body. Here’s why you need to steer clear of formaldehyde!

What is formaldehyde?

Used to prevent bacteria growth, formaldehyde is a preservative used in many personal care and nail products. It has a strong chemical smell (alarms bells guys- you do NOT want this on your skin!) and is used industrially as a disinfectant and fungicide (again- ALARM BELLS!!)

What is it found in?

  • Nail polish
  • Hair care products
  • Body wash
  • Eyelash glue straightening treatments
  • Cleansers

Dangers of formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is recognised by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a human carcinogen.

As a carcinogen Formaldehyde can cause:

  • Lung cancer
  • Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Leukaemia
  • Myeloid leukaemia

Formaldehyde can irritate both from inhalation and absorption resulting in...

  • Skin irritation (Dermatitis)
  • Asthma
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

Studies have also found formaldehyde to cause high levels of toxicity in the body resulting in...

  • Liver and neuro toxicity
  • Immunological toxicity
  • Reproductive and developmental toxicity

Look out for…

Formaldehyde is a sneaky one as it’s not always labelled explicitly on products. Instead it is covered up by the following ingredient names:

  • Quaternium-15
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Imidazolidinyl urea
  • Diazolidinyl urea
  • Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate
  • 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1
  • 3 diol (Bronopol)
  • Glyoxal
  • Oxaldehyde

So keep an eye out for these beauties and make sure you are checking labels and shopping at trusted natural stores! Here's my PERSONAL CARE BASICS BLOG on safe products and places to start!
