Are Your Tampons Making You Sick?
The average woman uses approximately 12 000 tampons in her lifetime. What if we told you each of those tampons was made from cotton that has been heavily sprayed with toxic chemicals and pesticides, would you still feel okay with using these products so intimately? This is where TOM Organics come in! TOM Organics have developed some truly amazing and innovative products that are made from Australia Certified Organic cotton and are great for both you and the environment. And when it’s THAT time of the month, your body just doesn’t need any additional stress- Am I right?
Conventional Cotton vs Australian Certified Organic
Many people are conscious about putting organic products in their mouths and even on their skin but chemical laden personal care products such as tampons, pads and liners are often forgotten about despite being products used in our most delicate areas! If there’s one thing that absolutely must certified organic its personal care products. Cotton is the most heavily sprayed crop in the world and using products containing these toxic chemicals and pesticides in such sensitive and highly absorbent areas repeatedly can be extremely detrimental to our health. Herbicides used on conventional cotton crops, such as Diuron, have been found to be carcinogenic and to cause birth defects – I don’t know about you, but this news had me swapping instantly!

What’s in your tampon?
Conventional tampons are made from a whole host of nasties! Take a look at the recipe:
- Viscose rayon- a synthetic fiber used to increase the absorbency of the tampon, which increases the risk of users developing toxic shock syndrome.
- Chlorine Bleach – bleaching chlorine creates a by-product called Dioxin, which the World Health Organisation have identified as a carcinogen. If you’re tampon is super white, it has most likely been chemically bleached.
- Polypropylene- in order to bind the short fibers of non-organic cotton, conventional tampons have to use polypropylene (plastic) to hold them together. Many people are allergic to plastic and according to Chinese doctor and fertility specialist, Nat Kringoudis, using tampons with these chemicals can exacerbate symptoms of endometriosis by causing inflammation and discomfort.
What’s different about TOM Organics?
Aimee Marks, founder of TOM Organics, describes that organic cotton tampons don’t need binders such as polypropylene to be held together because the organic cotton is naturally interwoven and strong. The danger when using conventional tampons is that these short fibers have a tendency to break off and trust me, this is something you DEFINITELY want to avoid-especially when these fibers are laden with chemicals and plastic and are known to cause Toxic Shock Syndrome! TOM Organic cotton tampons are naturally interwoven and strong so you never have to worry about this and can sleep easy knowing they use only Australian Certified Organic cotton, with no nasties! They are now stocked in a wide range of mainstream stores including Woolworths, Coles and IGA, so there’s no excuse not to make the switch! Invest in your health and the health of those and the environment around you and check them out!
