HOW TO HAVE THE BEST SLEEP - PREVENTING PREMATURE AGEING
How many nights do you stay up late scrolling through Instagram only to regret it the next day? Here are some reasons sleep needs to be your top priority and some of our tips for the best bit of shut eye you’ve had all year!
WHY DO WE NEED MORE THAN 7 HOURS SLEEP?
Sleep is incredibly important for rejuvenating and balancing the body! Did you know that less than 7 hours sleep could result in excess cortisol in your system which speeds up the aging process! For the majority of us a sleepless night means puffy eyes and a less than radiant complexion - not ideal. However, if you're scrimping on the sleep over a long period the cortisol overload can actually break down skin collagen leading to sunken skin, fine lines and dark circles under the eyes!
Did you know that less than 7 hours sleep could result in excess cortisol in your system which speeds up the ageing process?
I learnt this the hard way when I was in London late last year. The over excitement of the city and trying to make the most of each day caused me to sacrifice sleep and after a week of ad hoc sleep patterns my skin broke out like never before. This is where hormones come in! While you sleep your body balances hormones and even a difference of 1-2 hours sleep can wreak hormonal havoc such as reduced production of the growth hormone, which is responsible for repair and rejuvenation. It’s no wonder they call it ‘beauty sleep’ - without adequate sleep your body definitely won’t be feeling (or looking) its best!
HOW TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR THE MOST REJUVENATING SLEEP
- Turn off electronic devices AT LEAST an hour before you doze off. The blue light emitted from phones, televisions and other devices causes stimulation that can put your body in a state of ‘fight or flight’ which will have you tossing and turning all night!
- Try finishing eating for the day a couple of hours before you go to sleep! 8pm is usually my cut off time. This allows your body plenty of time to digest so that when your head hits the pillow your entire system can relax.
- Have a regular sleep time (before midnight for the most rejuvenating sleep!) and routine so your body’s circadian rhythms and production of melatonin (the sleepy hormone!) are regulated
- Have a pre-sleep routine to help your body wind down and prepare for sleep! Here are some of our favourite ways to ensure a deep and rejuvenating sleep!
