Brushes, brushes, brushes.. I wouldn't have the same profession without them. After all, what's a makeup artist without her/his brushes? A finger painter, I guess. Not quite the same though is it..
As much as I use my fingers and hands to blend makeup.. there's really nothing quite like buffing foundation into the skin to create that flawless "natural" finish.. and its next to impossible to create a smokey eye, the perfect contour or powder application without the help of a brush..
BELOW ARE A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE CRUELTY-FREE, ECO-FRIENDLY BRUSHES.
Unbeknownst to most, pretty much all mainstream brands that manufacture animal hair brushes are still doing so by sacrificing the wellbeing and lives of beautiful, innocent animals. The animals exploitation is cruel and inhumane and I'm fairly certain everyone would chose differently if they knew what was really happening to get you that new blush brush....
If you're going to invest, chose wisely.
THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS
Animal Hair - Brushes are commonly made from squirrel, mink, sable and horse or goat hair. Mink and sable brushes are products of the cruel fur industry. Many makeup brushes are manufactured in developing countries where there are few or no animal welfare regulations. A lot of brushes are said to be "cruelty-free" animal hair, though I think its increasingly difficult to truly know... Please see PETA article here for further information.
Super Synthetics - This is when the bristles of the brush are composed of hair that is synthetic and hand made, such as taklon and nylon. These brushes are cruelty-free and actually work just as well, if not better than real-hair brushes!
These days we are lucky to be absolutely spoilt for choice with A LOT of high quality synthetic brushes on the market.... though some brands, I support more than others due to the entire company's ECO Value's and philosophy.
Below are 3 of my favourite, high performance, quality, 100% cruelty free ECO BRUSHES I'm totally digging at the moment.. and they are all easily accessible in the land down under too (Aus)!
Real Techniques brushes are designed by pro makeup artists Sam & Nic Chapman, Real Techniques brushes combine high-tech materials with innovative design using Taklon bristles.
WHY I LOVE THEM?
Being designed by MUA's means they have an incredible full range of brushes.
TheY ARE GREAT QUALITY and They WORK MAGIC! I could confidently use ONLY these brushes to create ANY makeup look.
Colour coding is BRILLIANT for me (again, a MUA need). They are made by pro's for pro's and help the non pro's to be pro's...
Ere Perez is favourite Natural Makeup brand of mine, Ere Perez, has also released a new line of ECO-VEGAN brushes that are natural, super soft and certified cruelty free! The brushes are made with biodegradable materials, such as corn resin (instead of plastic) for handles and the bristles from super silky nylon.
SIDE NOTE: I've personally had the pleasure of doing the founder, Ere's, Makeup with these brushes and aside from LOVING the brushes, Ere herself is an incredibly warm, passionate and friendly women clearly dedicated to her Brands philosophy.. one of the brands commitment being:
"We select our natural ingredients with the greatest respect for mankind and the environment"
Why wouldn't we want to support this brand and use their amazing brushes!?
WHY I LOVE THEM
They really are super soft - I have clients comment how nice they feel on their skin!
The double ended options are fabulous for multi-tasking and travel.
They look beautiful and sculpt really well AS THE brushes are quite dense..THIS IS GOOD!
EcoTools brushes have soft synthetic bristles, sleek bamboo handles, recycled aluminum ferrules, and are 100% cruelty free. They also package their products in an eco-conscious way, including reusable pouches, post-consumer recycled paper and plastic, and recyclable packaging.
WHY I LOVE THEM
They are SO reasonably priced, easily accessible and do the job well.
They are about as ECO as you can go, from brushes, to handles to packaging!
They offer a pretty impressive full range/styles of brushes
You can buy 'Mini Brushes' that fit perfectly in your travel makeup bag! Every woman knows how big of a BONUS this is..

- Synthetic brushes repel bacteria and dirt better than animal hair.
- Many people have allergies to animal hair.
- Synthetic brushes shed less, if at all.

As a MUA of 8 years, I also have animal hair brushes in my kit (investments before I knew better). I will continue to use these as I think discarding them would be a complete waste of resources and a contradiction to anti-consumerism.. THOUGH I DO think that buying SYNTHETIC BRUSHES is the ONLY way that you can know for sure that no animal was harmed in the making of the brush. For this reason, moving forward, I will be supporting (purchasing) only synthetic brushes.
I think it would be great if we all did the same..
