So, I'm a total SUMMER BABY. Like most Aussies, I have literally grown up in the sun.. family photo proof below.

My dad was a pro surfer and my mum was the ultimate beach babe, so it was only natural that my 'home' as a toddler were the sandy shores of Bali. I then spent my teenage years living beside the picturesque, never-ending beaches of tropical Queensland and Byron Bay. As a result of always living 2mins from the beach, sunscreen has been a big part of my life - I just wish I was using the natural, non toxic, zinc oxide based UV Ray blocker sunscreen alternatives sooner!

WHY?

Basically all conventional sunscreens have been formulated using synthetic chemical UV blockers, linked to numerous skin conditions, irritations, endocrine disruption and even CANCER. Yep, you're sunscreen could potentially be the cause of disease. Quite the conundrum isn't it? Safer sunscreens use mineral sun-blocking ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that reflect the suns rays as opposed to being absorbed into our bloodstream (like the chemical blockers). While both Zinc and Titanium are photostable, the Environmental Working Group prefers Zinc Oxide. See further details at EWG

Check out some of the best natural, non toxic Sunscreens I recommend below. ALL have been tested and trialled by yours truly. Ya-ha, I do a lot of trialling my friends!

BUT WAIT!

Before you check out the sunscreen review - please keep the below in mind..

NATURAL PRODUCTS ARE CONSTANTLY BEING IMPROVED

All brands reformulate.. including sunscreen brands!

There is not one brand I know of that doesn't reformulate to improve their products after a certain amount of feedback from consumers.

What does this mean? IT MEANS THAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY TRIED A PRODUCT AND IT WAS CRAPOLA, ITS LIKELY THAT IT HAS NOW CHANGED TO A NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION. So if you're reading my review thinking, "hmmmm, I tried this sunscreen a year ago and it was really white or it was SUPER thick", it's more than possible that it's now a heck of a lot better and maybe, judging by my review, you could give it another whirl. For the sake of your health, and the planets - natural, organic and ethical brands deserve another chance.

YOU CAN'T DEAL WITH THICK, WHITE SUNSCREEN?

1. Not all natural sunscreens are as thick and reflect white anymore! Refer to above.

2. If they are still little thicker than what you are used to, my best advice is to ask yourself this: "Would I prefer a sunscreen that is SO quickly absorbed into my skin (and bloodstream) thats FULL of toxic chemicals compromising my health and possibly leading to cancer OR would I prefer to use a sunscreen thats a little thicker due to the SAFE and nourishing ingredients, such as shea butter and coconut oil"? I know what my answer is.

3. If they are a little whiter than "normal" (toxic) sunscreen its because zinc oxide is the active mineral ingredient which acts as the UV filter in natural sunscreens below. It is basically a chalky white mineral crushed into a powder (ideally non-nano).  So yeah, sometimes it just reflects a bit of white.. Though none of the below will make you look ghostly - PROMISE!

PLEASE ALSO NOTE * BODY SUNSCREEN IS NOT THE BEST CONSISTENCY FOR THE FACE . ALL OF THESE PRODUCTS BELOW WILL BE A LITTLE TOO THICK TO USE AS A DAILY FACE SPF PROTECTION. I HAVE A FACE SUNSCREEN REVIEW COMING SOON!

SUNSCREEN REVIEW TIME

Simple As That

Simple As That $29.95 (100ml) This sunscreen was developed to be worn everyday and to go under makeup with a gorgeous satin-finish as opposed to being thick and greasy. Raspberry Seed Oil, Green Tea and Rosehip oil are rich in antioxidants and will leave skin nourished and protected.

  • 30+ SPF
  • Non-greasy and light weight- perfect for under makeup
  • Made with certified organic ingredients
  • A little bit pricey but absolutely worth it in my opinion

WOTNOT $19.95 (100 gram) was one of my long standing favourites (and the first I ever tried and liked years ago) it's also reasonably priced, includes organic ingredients and is effective! It's still a little thick, but barely reflects any white whatsoever. This is the sunscreen I personally use majority of the time.

  • 30+ SPF
  • Reasonably priced
  • Effective and doesn't reflect white if rubbed in properly!
  • Made with certified organic ingredients

SOLEO ORGANICS $28.95 (75 gram) is awesome. It is the 'lightest' sunscreen I have tried, it isn't thick and it doesn't reflect white. Its just a little on the exy side in comparison to the others. I go through too much sunscreen to justify the price, but if you want one of the best - this is it.

  • 30+ SPF
  • Light weight, doesn't leave oily residue or reflect white
  • Made with certified organic ingredients
  • A little more pricey but worth it if you don't use it often

NATURAL INSTINCT Invisible $15.95 (100 gram) - This is a new and improved formula, so if you have the old version, don't judge it by that and give it another whirl! FUNNY STORY ALERT: my friend bought this after I was telling her how important using natural sunscreen is, BUT she must have found an older version and found it to reflect a lot of white - her boyfriend wouldn't even walk next to her because she was glowing white.. hehe. TRUST ME, this new invisible version is great though! Its a slightly thicker consistency but it has no white reflect. All in all, its a new favourite for the price!

  • 30+ SPF
  • Its a little thick, but it blends well with a good rub and doesn't reflect white
  • Super affordable in comparison to the others!

ECO LOGICAL Body Sunscreen $19.95 (100ml) falls in the middle range in terms of price. Its unscented, so good for those who don't like too much scent in products, though it does leave a white reflect. It's also a little on the thicker side, but it seems to lasts for hours!

  • 30+SPF
  • 3 hour water resistant
  • Non greasy though it does leave a slight white reflect

ECO TAN Natural Coconut Sunscreen $29.95 (150ml) contains certified organic ingredients and is vegan friendly and cruelty free. It also appears to be one of the most popular natural sunscreens on the market. It smells absolutely delicious (coconutty yumminess) though it does leave quite an obvious white reflect.

  • 30+SPF
  • Broad spectrum
  • Smells delicious
  • 3 hour water resistant
  • Non greasy though does leave white reflect
